Citizenship

To apply for citizenship applicant must:

  • Be a Canadian Permanent Resident

  • Have been physically present in Canada for 1, 095 days (3 years) out of 5 years immediately before the application

  • Have filed taxes (if applicable)

  • Have demonstrated sufficient language skills at least CLB 4

  • Have passed Citizenship Test with at least 15 correct answers out of 20

Important

Physical Presence in Canada:

In physical presence calculation, applicants may include the time they spent in Canada as temporary residents or protected persons. Each day in this status counts as half a day, and the maximum number of days that can be counted toward your physical presence in Canada is 365.

A temporary resident is someone who is authorized to enter or stay in Canada as a:

  • Visitor

  • Student

  • Worker or

  • Temporary resident permit holder

A protected person is someone who:

  • Was found to be in need of protection or a convention refugee by the Immigration and Refugee Board or

  • Received a positive decision on a Pre-Removal Risk Assessment from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Language proficiency:

Canada has two official languages: English and French.  All applicants between 18 and 54 years of age on the day you sign your application must show that they can speak and listen at a specific level in one of these languages.

  • If you have studied in Canada, transcripts of your education might be sufficient proof of your language ability
